It should come as no surprise to anyone that Wizard of the Coast is a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc., and for that reason, several decisions have been made recently that have upset members of the Magic community around the world (Walking Dead's Secret Lair will come your way) and among them is the announcement of Universe Beyond.
In February of this year, Chris Cocks, current president and CEO of Wizard of the Coast, announced at the Hasbro Inc. investor event the launch of a new product, Universe Beyond, a sub-brand of Magic the Gathering.
So how is it different from the rest of the cards? Well, easy, the plans, characters and stories from other franchises, such as The Lord of the Rings, Warhammer 40,000, Walking Dead and Stranger Things, which will have a different appearance than what we know, the frame will be modified to allow them to be differentiated, it will have a triangular holographic seal, possibly like that of TWD.
WHERE AND WHEN
Universe Beyond will not only be exclusive to the Secret Lair, we will also be able to find it in the rest of the products, since as they have just confirmed in the case of the Secret Lair of Stranger Things, once 6 months have passed the cards will be included in The List, but we must be careful since Wizard is not yet entirely clear.
Within the revealed information it is indicated that; For those players interested in characters from other universes, Secret Lair will give them the possibility of collecting cards set in other worlds, with exclusive arts, however for those who are not seasoned collectors, as I anticipated, you will be able to find these cards in the Set Boosters, but with mechanics specific to the Magic Multiverse, with the intention of increasing their frequency and not transforming it into an exclusive memorabilia object for collectors.
In turn, Wizard announced that the period of time in which the Secret Lair will be on sale will be extended, to increase access to them, being available as part of a Superdrop, over the course of a full month. I want to make it clear that this will only happen from the launch of Stranger Things in the future, and it will not be done with The Walking Dead, so do not expect to find Rick Grimes and company in Set Bossters.
As for the release date, it is still unclear.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE OF UNIVERSE BEYOND HOLD?
The Lord Of The Ring and Warhammer 40,000 will be part of Universe Beyond in the near future. This has already been confirmed by several specialized sites, such as hipster of the coast, where it is stated that its arrival will be in 2022, generating expectation among fans of both sagas.
And then what? Well, to be honest, Hasbro's extensive catalog of properties offers an infinite range of possibilities, from (and don't get upset):
If you've just read the entire list, let me tell you that I just trolled you, since Universe Beyond does not necessarily respond to the trademarks and licenses registered under the domain of Hasbro Inc, so let's not panic and hallucinate seeing Ratón Miguelito as a Planeswalker.
Universe Beyond is about incorporating franchises that, due to their enormous mythology or Lore (army of fans and followers), will allow Wizard to generate an approach of MTG to other communities and, why not, to grow this vast and beautiful multiverse that has been built in the last 25 years.
